Default usb driver?

I formatted my dell inspiron 8600 laptop and reinstalled all the drivers I could find but still cant get high speed usb to work, its just very slow and says this device will perform faster if connected to a usb 2.0 port? they were perfect before.
Also i cant find a driver to make my Ethernet port to work?

Any help would be great; links to the correct drivers would be really good.
Thanks for the help people.

Did you check dell's website and install the updated drivers?

Have you installed Windows Xp Service Pack 1a (or higher)?

Best thing to do install Windows Xp Service Pack 3 as it's up to day.

Check Dell's Website for drivers.

I'm not aware of any USb "drivers" other than the chipset drivers. USB 2.0 support is included with SP2 and higher, as KC said. Make sure you've got the latest service pack installed and I think that should take care of that problem.

Is the OS in question Vista ? According to the OP' signature it's Vista, so the XP service packs are non-applicable. You may have to find your drivers on your disk if you have one to get the Ethernet fixed.

Here is your Network driver: ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R86360.EXE

Ironically for such an old laptop (nearly 5 years now) it actually has USB2
I would say this is most definitely XP
And you highly likely require minimum XP SP2, and ideally XP SP3
Please do all Windows Security updates and Service Packs

Like I said, I think the OP is using Vista unless otherwise specified.

He's not, for the following reasons:

His signature specs refer to another computer
This laptop never (and still doesn't) have Vista support
This laptop is also too old for Vista support
I know

There you go

Ok, true, it may not be that computer. However, he may still be running Vista 32-bit on it

I can prove you wrong on the highlighted part.

EDIT: Dell Inspiron 8600 Vista Driver restore disk

Why would there be a Vista restore disk for this if it never was supported ?

Quote:
Dell Inspiron 8600 Vista Windows restore disk

This is an automated Inspiron 8600 Vista restore disk. The Inspiron 8600 drivers are supplied in a special windows friendly format. This means that your Dell Inspiron 8600 Vista Laptop will automatically find and install all the drivers for your system, with hardly any user interaction. If you have installed a new windows operating system and half of your Laptop just wont work (with errors like no sound no internet or bad graphics) then this is exactly what this CD has been designed to fix repair. You can also use this CD Disk If you just need to return your software broken Laptop back to the factory setup. There are also a lot of utilities and resources on this cd that you would of found on your Laptop when it was new in its original new condition
