Upgrading hard disc

I have an Acer Aspire 5751Z laptop and I am considering up grading the hard disc to one with a much larger capacity. Firstly can anyone tell me what inerface it uses to connect the disc and also whether it is possible to copy the contents of the original disc to the new disc and if so how. If not would I be as well buying a copy of the new operating system ( windows 7 home premium ) and installing it from scratch and then reloading all my programs.

I'm not sure how to find out which connection it uses (try looking in the manual), but you can use something like gParted to copy the contents of the drives over (which would involve plugging both drives into another comp on which to run gParted). No need to buy a new copy of the OS.
