toshiba satellite blank screen

Hi guys. my mate rang me up today and said that their laptop screen just went blank. i asked what happened and they said it just went like that. i have read about inverters or backlight. How can i fix it cause its out of warranty. also how do i get stuff off the hdd if the comp is really dead? Can i just take it out like a pc and hook it up to another? Any help would be great
i will post more if i find out anything else about it.

If you can shine a light through the back and still read the writing on the screen (it will be extremely dim) then it could be a bad inverter or backlight. If you test it out and can't see any writing on the screen using a blacklight then the screen has gone out and will need to be replaced.
