Default things act crazy

I have a HP laptop
For some odd reason things have gone crazy. IE does not display my web contents correctly and when I use an IM program I can not see what I have typed nor what the other person has typed. I have tried AIM, Yahoo, and MSN. I have tried updating-didn't work, I tried restoring to a different time before this problem began-didn't work. Can someone please help.
