Hey all,

I'm planning to buy a laptop by the end of the month. I'm a CS grad student and will be using the laptop for programming, networking and the like.

I will also be using it to game quite a bit. However, my budget is only 40-50k Indian rupees, which roughly translates to between 800 and 1000 dollars. Add to that the fact that here in India, an equivalen laptop would be $100 more expensive than in the USA, a gaming laptop is out of the question.

So my requirements are as follows:

1. Heavy multitasking and programming work should be handled very smoothly.

2. Games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 should run smoothly on medium to low settings.

The good news is that I don't need a large hard drive since my desktop has a 1.5TB HDD and it's more than sufficient.

I've been looking at the Dell Inspiron 15R with an i5 processor, 4 gigs of RAM, a 320 gig hard drive and a mobility radeon 5470 1GB variant. For an alternative, I considered the Lenovo Y550P with a similar config but a bigger hard drive and a GT240M 1 GB variant.

Which of these would be a better choice? Also, any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Well, there are no Core i7 laptops that fit my rather strict budget.

I have looked at the following:

Dell Inspiron 15R - Inspiron 15R Laptop Details | Dell India

Dell Studio 15 - Dell Studio 15 Laptop Details | Dell India

Lenovo Y550P - Lenovo - Laptop computers - IdeaPad - Y Series - Laptops - Overview -

ASUS N61J - Techtree.com India > Reviews > Mobile Computing > Notebooks > Asus N61J (N61JV) Optimus Ready Notebook

Acer Aspire 5470 and Acer TimelineX - Acer Home

Sony VAIOs are too overpriced, Toshiba has nothing above an i3 variant listed on its India site.

I agree, the ASUS N61J is probably my top choice, but it's availability is sketchy at best. It's price is also not clear. Most sources quote it to be around the 50000 rupee mark, which would be in my budget.

How would the gaming capabilities of the GT240M (Lenovo Y550) and the HD5470 compare?

From my experience, they overcharge on memory too. That was 3 years ago, though. They wanted $100 for one more Gig of ddr2

Hmm, so there isn't a significant difference between the 5470 and the 240m is there? Because the price difference between the Lenovo and the Inspiron is almost 110 dollars and the Lenovo has an i3 as compared to the Inspiron which has an i5.

The Inspiron is the best choice then?
