I'm currently looking at new laptops but can't seem to figure out the best way to go.

One of the most important things for me is having a lightweight machine. Very light is very important! It doesn't have to be too small but I need lightness as I carry it everyday everywhere I go. Durability is just as important as I take it all over the place on a motorbike! That's why the Panasonic Let's Note was a good choice 3.5 years ago (very durable, lightweight, and a nice size). I was hoping to spend much less and get something else good this time too. Before my Panasonic, I had a Toshiba Tecra that was too big and heavy and fell apart on a regular basis. It was a pretty decent laptop but a real lemon. I have seen the new Toshiba laptops and they are a zillion times different. They look and feel more durable. However, I am still a bit concerned about getting another one. I probably won't touch the Sony Viaos for the same reason. While they look like beautiful lightweight technology, I am really concerned about their durability.

Ordering internationally is not always possible – it usually depends on the company's willingness to do so. There can sometimes be problems – some places won't ship to Japan or the cost of shipping is extremely high. However, there are ways around that (ie) have it shipped to a friend or family member in North America, and have them ship it to me from there.

One more thing… I often like to run several applications simultaneously. How important is memory? I upgraded my current machine from 1 to 2GB of RAM. I know that some new laptops have 8GB of RAM. However, I don't think it's easy to get them without compromising the size and price of the laptop. Speed is one of my primary operating concerns.

I can understand lightweight importance. Durability, I am not sure of. Laptops are always fragile. Just make sure you have it well padded and you can get any laptop.

Toshiba is a good brand. So is ASUS. Any i5/i7 laptop should suit you. Newer laptops have been lighter than they were 5 years ago.

What programs are you running? 10 little programs can be had at any RAM capacity. But running Photoshop and 3 games is not possible even with 8GBs. Laptops are limited by the CPU and GPU, power and heat caps. You can run most anything, yes, but you need to watch what you are running, or your computer will get sluggish.

Thanks for the info. -- very useful. Basically, I'm surfing, e-mailing, skyping, watching videos, TV, listening to the radio, etc. I often run several applications at the same time.

I was out for a few hours today looking at various shops. It seems that here in Tokyo it's difficult to get a 500GB HD and 4GB of RAM on a laptop with a screen that's under 14". As a result, I am most likely going to order one online. I think the EEEPC, Asus, or Acer netbooks 13.3" may be just what I'm looking for. A 10" might be a bit small, whereas my current Panasonic is 12" and a really nice size.

What do you think about this one?

ehhh i can ...... i can even run 3ds max, lightwave and play music at the same time with no issue
actualy i bet that any laptop running 4 dedicated core faster then 1.6 or 2 dedicated and HT at 2.6 and have a decent GPU should have no issue doing so

the standar atm is 4GB in 2 stick (2x2GB) higher then that in a laptop and you will have to trade in part of you'r anatomy to buy it the price is around 335$ for a decent 4gb stick
and 4GB is well enough i've tryed to overload my 4GB to get an excuse to upgrade to 8GB but i haven't suceeded

some of the vaois have an metal chassis (haven't loket the aliage) and feel very resistant with a good build qualitie while some other feel like cheap plastic toys it realy depend on the model and line up of vaio you are looking to

if you don't need any 3d power this laptop should do the job just fine seeing from what you are upgrading so we kinda need more detail about what kind of aplication you wanna run in order to beter orient you
