It depends on what components you choose and where you buy from. Depending on the options that you want it's not always that much cheaper to DIY. You could do something like this:

That's comes out to $1014+shipping by my calculation. You'd either supply or buy a copy of Windows (another $100). A similar Prebuilt model will run you $1300-1400 depending who you buy it from. I just configured the exact same notebook with an OS on ibuypower's (cheap, not a great builder, though) website for $1321+ship. So you can save a couple hundred bucks if you buy the right parts.
