Default Need Help tweaking my laptop

Ok so I have a dell latitude CPx ( got it for free) and I want to get some use out of it.
I need a few suggestions, what can I do to get this thing as fast as possible? I tried searching through the tutorial forum,i got 20 pages in, and decided that there is just soo much information.

So for my questions:

What can I do to improve my performance?
So far I've:
Made my desktop look very bland, by going with the classic view, and I have also taken off my backround..

anything else? (I heard something about a paging file?)

Should I windows update?

Secondly, what programs would you suggest for minimal resources? Firefox is the devil on this system..

right click my computer... it properties... Advanced... hit Performance settings, choose Adjust for best performance..

i just use IE, and if you select adjust for best performance, all it does is uncheck all those options.

And yes you should do windows update atleast once a month.
Defrag your pc one a month.

I use a software called CCleaner to clean out a lot of junk, i dont use the registry cleaner it has , ive learned to stay away from them...just stick with the cleaning part and not the (issues) tab.
