need help with laptop

hey guys i have an older laptop and it is hard to see the screen

it powers on and i here the windows xp loading up and i can see the screen if i look real close with light would this mean i have a bad grafic card ? or screen ?

its a gateway

You have a bad backlight. It's a tricky fix to do. I did it once, it was a hassle. I just bought a new screen.

Umm, no. If you can shine a flashlight on the screen and see the desktop plain as day, your backlight is dimming out.
