Dadi Perlmutter, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's mobility group, showed off Intel's next-generation Montevina mobile platform this morning and claimed that it will double integrated graphics performance.

Perlmutter showed an Intel reference Montevina product running Universe at War: Earth Assault running with respectable performance and it surprisingly didn't look that bad.

Of course, Montevina won't be released until later this year, so it'll be interesting to see how it handles other games – Intel has been known to deliver respectable performance in a few games, but widespread support has been where it has lacked in the past.

Hopefully with Montevina, Intel will improve driver support, enabling more and more games to be played on Intel integrated graphics processors. After all, the mobile market is growing massively, and it's set to overtake desktop PC shipments before the end of the decade.

Perlmutter also claimed that you'll be able to watch Blu-ray movies on Montevina notebooks smoothly on battery power – and what's more, he said there'll still be enough battery life left to do other things after you've finished watching the film.

Looks promising but Intel's graphics division has a long history of overhyping, over promising, and under delivering on graphics performance. Remember how amazing the GMA 950 was supposed to be? It barely ran WoW on low settings. Even x3100 isn't very impressive, especially for all of the hype they had on it. From the stuff they gave to me you'd swear it was like having an 8800GT in your notebook. They also have a recent history of running much better on certain games than other ones so I am being pessimistic about it.

There, that's my angry old man rant for the day.
