Default Laptop to tv via hdmi

My laptops resolution is 1600x900, i used to hook it up to the tv via vga. My tv is 1920x1080 but recently i've hooked it up using hdmi, to play fear 3. I've played on 1920x1080 and it was lagging so i lowered the resolution to 1280x720 at 60Hz and cant tell the difference except for the performance improvement, on vga the lower resolution made the game look terrible.
