well my dads laptop takes a diffrent hd the one on his laptop has pins as the other looks like a sata

You don't need a hard drive to get into the bios. Pull the drive and power up.

tried that nothing came up. ok well i pulled the drive out put it into my sata computer and the hd booted up. so it seems like its not getting power. but the computer lights turn on and the fan spins. but the hd does not turn on in the laptop

It looks like a bad motherboard then. You should get at least a Gateway logo on the screen with or without a hard drive.
