Default Laptop Suggestion $400-600 quick response please?

My brother's girlfriend wants a laptop and she is willing to spend about $400-600. She has absolutely no interest in gaming but may watch DVDs on it (not a big deal).

What would be a good option for that price?

V_V. I would really appreciate any help my brother is rather impatient. I know a decent amount about desktops but I only know a small amount about laptops.

Last time I checked its always a bad idea to buy a dell computer. I found one on Newegg for $600 that is leaps and bounds better than anything you'll get from Dell for $700.

I have a more specific question. What can you tell me about laptop battery compatibility. What kind of problems could I run into? Do the physical connections differ? If I buy one at random could it burn out my computer due to incompatibility? Basically I'm asking if its possible to buy a bad computer and give it a good battery and have it work. What would I need to look for to make sure it would work properly?

The Dell vostro series series is great.. go check out the 1500 series in their small business section... and don't give me the "dell blows" crap. Because there business editions are better quality machine. With laptops, not desktops.
