I agree with whoever said to get a cheap laptop, then a powerful desktop. Anything Core 2 with 2/3GB of RAM will work fne for school, heck you don't even need that much power. I planned to get a 1600-2000 gaming laptop for school, and then i realized that gaming sessions will only last like 20 mins at a time bc of the battery. Plus i didn't like carrying big heavy, and HOTTT laptops around school all day. I settled on a 12" Tablet PC and am saving the rest for nehalem.

PS keep an eye out on slickdeals, i see laptops for under $500 with Core 2 and vista, which is all you need.
