Hey guys,

So i am at a loss. I purchased a HP Pavilion g6-2264ca last summer for work and absolutely hated 8.0. As such i thought it would be a great opportunity to try out ubuntu. However after installing ubuntu I could not get my network card to work, connect to the internet, use usb etc.

Next I tried windows 7 and of course the same thing, as I found out that the laptop does not have the required drivers to operate on anything other than windows 8. So now I am stuck.

I cannot find any drivers that will allow me to use the laptop with windows 7, and of course I cannot reinstall windows 8 because I do not have a internet connection on the laptop to download windows 8 and my other computer cant even create a windows 8 install disk without a valid product key, which of course I do not have because the laptop uses a OEM key in the bios.

Any suggestions? or know where I could get the proper drivers? I could burn them to a disk and then install them on the laptop, I just have no idea where to find them or where to look.

You can extract the key from the BIOS using the tool mentioned here (RW Everything): installation - Clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 from OEM key - Super User

As for drivers... exactly what drivers can't you find? Where did you try looking? Only on the HP website, or did you go to each individual component manufacturers' websites and look up the drivers that way? I'm sure there are Win7 drivers out there.

I tried the HP site for drivers but there are only Windows 8/8.1 as that is all they support. I also searched online for the drivers, though I did not search individual drivers as I was not sure how to find the full lost of components I would need drivers for.

One site I did find, has a large list of drivers specific to my laptop, HP Pavilion g6-2264ca Notebook PC Drivers Download for Windows.

But I do not know which ones to download, as there are multiple ones for each component. I.e for network cards there are:

Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows 8
Qualcomm Atheros AR9000 Series Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows
Atheros Wireless LAN Driver
Ralink Bluetooth Software Driver
Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver
Ralink Bluetooth Software Driver
Ralink 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Ralink 802.11 Wireless LAN Adapter
Atheros Bluetooth 4.0 + HS Driver for Microsoft Windows
Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth 4.0+HS Driver for Microsoft Windows 8
Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth 4.0+HS Driver for Microsoft Windows

I have no idea which of these to install. Also I dont see any for USB connectivity which is not working at the moment.

Open up Device Manager

On everything that has a yellow exclamation mark, do the following:
Right click -> Properties -> Details tab

Post the following info for each item that has a yellow exclamation mark:
The "Device Description" under the Property drop down
Under "Hardware Ids", it should have something like VEN_####&DEV#### ; post that section, where #### = some alphanumeric combination.

This way we can look up each component individually and get you the correct drivers.

Sorry I had to go home on my lunch to copy down the values. (No internet so had to write them down, hopefully they are right :).

Good luck.

Wasn't sure what the 'Unknown Device' you posted was, so we'll wait until after you install the other drivers to see if it goes away or not.

KK,so far everything is working/updated except the ethernet connection.

I was able to connect via my phones bluetooth but of course that is not a permanent solution. When i try to install the driver I get

"The RealTek Network Controller Wa Not Found. If Deep Sleep Mode is Enabled, Please Plug the Cable"

Try plugging in an ethernet cable - I've seen some laptops that only actually "activate" the ethernet when there's something plugged into it.
