I would say your friends best bet is to find a local PC shop, and ask them what kind of hardware they have laying around for $100-$200.... If he wants mobility for that price, it is going be very old, or battle scarred.

If you still have it... give him that Alienware laptop you got.

if your gonna buy a laptop for 200 buck... be suspicous of anything with windows xp or vista... because its probably going to be a card boared box with stickers on it...

i would save up and buy a laptop for like 500-600... that way u can actually use the lateset versions of aol and stuff....

and why does he need it to be portable?

dont they have some cheap phones or little pda devices or something that have aim on them? If all he is really doing is using it for aim and aol... u can use a cellphone...

The TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) of a cell phone is MUCH greater than the $100-$200 laptop.... You get locked into a contract for 12-24 months, with a bill probably in the $30-50 ball park.... $360-600 for a year, $720-1200 for 2 years....
