Vista Starter Edition is not the way to go. If you have the choice go with XP in that case.

Vista is the future and is good. But not Starter Edition. That is the most possible lowest version. Even below Basic. So not worth it.

I have a Compaq c7 series, very stable, afforadable and upgradeable. My vote

3dMark06 = 12954 3d Marks

I'd go with the one with best CPU/graphics chip, and screen overall.
Ignoring brand entirely.
