Default Inspiron 8500 Touchpad not recognized on computer

My hard drive died along with a chip of ram. I replaced the hard drive. I have installed XP and everything works fine except the touchpad. I am currently using a mouse through the USB slot. I installed the alps driver and it said my driver was current. Is there some kind of software i need to install? or could it be my computer settings.

Touch pad drivers are rather generic.

Check BIOS to make sure you did not turn it off.
Check your manual to see if you did not turn off the touch pad via one of the fuction keys
Check cable from mainboard to touchpad. You might need to remove your keyboard. BE CAREFULL as your do not want to break any of those ribbon cable or ribbon cable connectors.
