I know this is a bit old, but it is possible to do the downgrade, you need a USB floppy drive though, here are the instructions:

The big question is whether or not sony put thier drivers (let alone drivers for any other OS appart from the one supplied) up on thier website.

Last time i had a sony with a crash harddrive, it did have the wounderful task of looking at the chipset manufacturer's websites for drivers.
