Default i5 or i7 based laptop?

This laptop would be used for school and general use. No gaming. Running MSoft office products, SQL Server, Visio, Visual Studio, occasional VMWare, maybe enCase and/or FTK, web, gimp(rarely), etc. Would an i5 machine be good or should I go with an i7?

VMware alone would gain the most from an i7. That's sounds like your best bet.

How much in VMware do you intend to do?

Nothing serious. Mostly just trying out different Linux distros.

How much RAM do you plan on running in the laptop? Most of those programs and especially a VM environment loves ram usage.

Looking at 8gb.

This is the one I'm contemplating.
