I was wondering instead of buying 2*512MB sticks, why can't i just put in one of these??

Won't work, thats DDR2. It is best to upgrade it in pairs.

They are DDR PC-2700 184pin you can still get them fairly cheap although DDR is becoming old now

Looks like can get up to 1GB of ram, 2 sticks of 512mb ddr333.
