dark screen on my Fujitsu life book, is it just the back light?

hi.
Ive got a life book e series laptop,
when i turn it on it looks like it will power up and give me the normal windows tune but my LCD is really dark and i just cannot see the screen though i can just make it out with the right light conditions.
Ive tried to put my LCD monitor into it but that just keeps saying ( no signal)
so does that sound like the inverter for the back light or is there something else i should try ?

please bare in mind I'm not brill with techno language as I'm more comfortable with mechanics then electronics so if you could keep the difficult words to a minimum

Try taking a flashlight, shine it at the screen at a 45* angle. That work? Can you see the desktop? If so, your backlight is bad.

hi yes i can see the logos but i was wondering if my problem was more then just the lights as if i plug my lcd monitor into it then it doesnt work or recieve a signal ?
but i know the monitor works of course!
so is it definitely still the light or could there be another problem ?

I think it is just the backlight. You might have to apply the settings before your external LCD works.
