its a communication port, typically used to send print jobs.

a television remote uses infrared to send signals to your tv.

okay, thanks for the answer (:

does that mean that some sort of control i could use to remotely control the laptop with certain jobs? :s Nothing such comes with the laptop? If not, what is it actually used for - because surely the wi-fi handles print jobs?

Infrafed is an old school communication device for people to send print jobs to a printer if it is in line of sight, and to cell phones. Most people AFAIK don't bother with it anymore as it is line of sight, and not many other devices use it anymore.
