connecting laptop to tv

I want to connect my laptop to my tv making my tv the main monitor. I have a vga to hdmi cable. When i plug it in nothing comes up on my tv and i am on the right source. Also in display settings on my laptop it doesn't even show that there is another monitor connected so what am i doing wrong?

a simple vga to hdmi cable will not work.
because VGA is analog and HDMI is digital.
it's like trying to use film on your digital camera.

you'll need to buy a converter that can actually output VGA signal to HDMi

so what is a vga to hdmi cable for then? will i need to buy vg to vga and hdmi to hdmi with converter box then instead
