Computer freezing on Desktop

Hey guys, I am sure there is already a thread for this sorry. I just need an answer to this quickly! My dell laptop keeps freezing at the dekstop. Its running windows XP, it gets to the desktop, not all the icons load, such as quicktime and a few others. I cant click the start button, the mouse moves around fine and everything! I tried running in safe mode and it froze in that too! I think my computer finally **** the bed but I am hoping for the best here! Any help will be greatly appreciated! Please and thank you!!

What type of specs? Right now I am not at home but can try to answer. I just want to get this figured out!

I mean like the processor, the ram and the hard drive. Truthfully you could be experiencing a multitude of problems and the specs will help determine what it is.
