Compaq presario 900 backlight problems

as the title says im having problems with the backlight on a laptop a friend gave to me. As it boots up it displays the compaq logo fine but then it cuts out and I can only vaguely see the screen. this makes me think that it is a software issue rather than anything else. any ideas?

Have you updated the video drivers?

trying that now dont think it will do anything though, because the backlight allways stops working while its still in the "RAM check" phase of bootup

EDIT: well that did nothing, im going to try and update the bios if i can
EDIT2: i think i found the problem, the button that tells the laptop the lid is closed is probly stuck down, ill pull it apart and see.
