Blank dvds not recognzed

Got an acer 3680 rebooted it because of serious virus problems, but now im trying to burn a dvd and it it keeps asking to insert a blank disk. i tired both dvd -/+ R and it gives the same result. Tried 4 different burning programs and all gave same results. When i go to my computer for the 'DVD/CD-RW Drive' and click properties, it shows 0 bytes used/free.
any pointers or may it be something im overlooking
i also tried using 3 different dvd brands

May just be your laser that is a bit dirty. Take a Q-tip, and rub it inside, through the front, into where the laser is. That sometime fixes it.

well it can read other disk that have data on it...plus i tried using a dvd laser lens cleaner from radioshack and it even recognized that the disk was in the drive

Just the burning laser may be bad. I would look at getting a new DVD burner.
