Default Asus x53e no wireless internet, intermittant wired internet

I just bought a used asus x53e laptop. Everything was working fine with it when I got it home, but I wanted to wipe everything clean so I don't have to worry about anything the previous owner left on the machine. I used my windows ultimate boot disc which has killdisk on it. I wiped out both partitions on the drive including the OS. I reinstalled windows 7 ultimate 64bit and then went online via my desktop looking for the necessary drivers to get the internet working. I went to the asus website and downloaded my driers from there.

I got the internet to work intermittently when plugged in by the ethernet cable. It will work for a few minutes and then the connection disappears for a few minutes, but seems to come back on it's own. When it's not working, the internet icon in the bottom right of the task bar shows the "loading" circle and it says either "identifying network" or "unidentified network" and "no internet access".

The wireless does not work at all. The little icon in the task bar that normally shows you what wireless networks are available isn't even there. Also note that I am aware of asus's way of switching on the wireless, via the Fn + F2 buttons. I have it ON and it's not working.

I've tried unplugging my modem and router. My desktop and other asus laptop have no issues with the internet.

I ran the windows 7 "troubleshoot problem" utility and it basically said that everything looks like it's configured correctly but there might be a problem with the cable. Ha, I don't think so. It did generate 2 text files though, one ipconfig /all and the other route.print. Also it gave me an ETL file, but I don't know how to open it or what to do with that.

ipconfig /all shows the following:

I just ran ipconfig /all on my other asus laptop which is getting wireless internet just fine, and I compared the 2. It looks like the wireless adapter isn't present at all in my x53e's ipconfig /all results. In my device manager, it shows only the qualcomm atheros ar8151 pci-e gigabit ethernet controller (ndis 6.20) but nothing for a wireless adapter. Just below that in the "other devices" it shows "network controller" with the warning symbol next to it. I found out the name of the wireless adapter in someone's review of the laptop online, it's the atheros ar9285 wireless network adapter. I downloaded driver version 9.2.0.470 but I couldn't figure out how to install it... the zip file contains 4 files, the file extensions are .cat, .pdb, .sys, .inf and I don't know what to do with them.

Before I figured out the manufacturer of the wireless adapter, I had already downloaded and installed a few other drivers from the asus website in the wireless section but none worked.

SO, to summarize, I need to figure out how to get my wired connection working consistently and how to get my wireless adapter to be recognized by the computer. Any suggestions? I'm not the most tech savvy person so I might be missing some important info needed to troubleshoot this. Just let me know if you need any more info from me.

It also sounds like you downloaded SIMILAR but the wrong drivers. Asus lists a whole a different of wireless drivers for that computer but all with different manufacturers. Verify you have the right one installed. Same goes for the ethernet driver as well.

Right, that's what I said in my post. I think I have the right driver now but I don't know what to do with those file types. Any other driver I've ever installed was an .exe file.

Sorry, your post was really long. It thought it was your signature at first glance.
If you go to your device manager, right-click the wireless adapter and click update driver software.
-In the next box, click "browse my comptuer for driver software". Instead of browsing for the driver automatically, click "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
- Click the "Have Disk..." button.
- In the "install from disk" box, click the "browse" button.
- Locate the extracted zip file you downloaded and find the .inf file (that is the driver). Click ok and it will install the driver for you then.

Haha yeah it was pretty long. Just figured I' explain everything in detail. Anyways, your instructions worked and my wireless is now working fine.

Thanks!
