acer aspire 3100 usb problem???

okay so i have a acer aspire 3100. and all of the sudden the usb ports have just stopped working. when you plug a mp3 player or zip drive in it just says device unrecognized and won't show up in my computer. and now it won't show up at all. i've tried plugging the items into all the usb ports. i've updated, restarted the computer and still nothing works. please help!!!!
