Scan, update, defrag, run disk-cleanup, and clean-up services. That should do the trick.

definitely try the msconfig idea- that should do it- if you have to, select only to load the essentials. look at the locations and all and determine what is spyware, virus, or other crap, and what you actually want.

look in the tab Startup, and find foreign programs and uncheck them. this makes them not startup

Go to the last tab on the right. Look at all the programs listed there. Some will be obvious what they do, others won't. For those you can't identify, plug them into the search engine on this website: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Turn off the ones you don't want. Hit okay. Restart. Windows will probably complain that you did something when you boot back up, but just hit the "Ignore" checkbox on the message when it comes up, and relax.
