working with com and usb

I am looking for information about whether I can use a USB device and make the computer see it as a COM device on COM1 or COM2?

We have USB voice wave pedals and the facility we will be working has software that does not recognize USB and only looks for COM... is there a way to convert this or make the system recognize the USB as a COM device?

I think that if you use a USB to serial adapter that would work...haven't worked with them for a while
