Why so Dark?

I have just bought a 19" TFT monitor and now when I play certain games or watch a DVD the picture is really dark and sometimes black for dark scenes in games and movies. I have checked the obvious stuff, like brightness, contast, resolution etc could it be a hardware issue? I only have Radeon 7000 64Mb series graphics card, is this the problem? Will getting a radeon 9800 pro 128Mb solve the issue?

Go into Control Panel, do you see Adobe Gamma? If so run the wizard and see if it helps anything.
