what is a southbridge on the mobo? and how does it differ from the northbridge. all i know is that the northbridge determines what cpu one gets.

Southbridge is basically a second chip that interfaces the northbridge to other peripherals (PCI slots, sometimes IDE or USB ports, audio, sometimes video [may be on northbridge]). It's part of the chipset (the set of north and southbridge chips) and usually a particular southbridge only works with a few or only one northbridge.
