Default what is a M4A file?

i am just curious, because i downloaded a file the other day and it had a few M4A files in it and i have not come up with anyhting else then these type of files are newer audio files. a differnt type then mp3.

can anyone back this up or tell me otherwise?

I'm pretty sure that these files are coupled with a MPEG layer 4 video file. The M4A files are the audio layer that go along with the video.
