PCI-E 16x, or in the case of SLI, 8x slots are used for video cards. The other PCI-E slots will be used for other hardware such as sound cards, network cards, PPUs and any other component which uses the PCI interface, when they become widely availible.

Not that any of that will fit inbetween the vid cards though. The fans are getting to big, you might be able to put something in a 4x PCI-E if your mobo has one.

a PCI-E 1x slot has a 1GB/S bandwith
normal PCI has about 200MB/s bandwith

it is basically designed to eventually replace PCI, and for the motherboard makers to sell more boards
