What difference will a high quality PSU make?

Not to sound like a complete newbie, but I'm currently running my system on a 350watt PSU that came with my case. Nothing fancy, but seems to get the job done.

A friend just gave me a 500watt PSU, seems heavy duty, literally feels like double the weight of my current PSU and has a fan on the inside.

Everything seems to run fine now, but occasionally a little hot. (Only during the summer months). New HS/fan combo seem to be helping a lot for the heat issues.

So what would be the advantage to popping it in?

at this point, if everything is running well, there's no real advantage, except to have it there, just in case. I see no harm in putting it in. Sometimes the larger ones are more stable when running low power output.

It's good to have in there, in that case you might need it, you know?
