What determines a good Vid. Card? core, effective, DDR ...?

I don't really know what to look for when getting a good video card. I've seen the 5900XT at 400MHZ core and 800MHZ effective and I've seen the radeon 9800 Pro at like 350MHZ clock and 600MHZ effective, both at 128MB and I've been told that the radeon is better. Why? What would determine a good video card?

I believe that in many benchmarks, the 5900xt outperforms the 9800 pro

no it doesnt. the 9800pro was the king in the old generation. now the king is the 6800 and the queen is the 6600.
