Default virtual memory tweaking

I want to tweak my virtual memory to try and get smoother graphics in my flight sim. I currently have an ATA-100 hard drive as master and a little ol' 3-gig drive as slave with 2000 MB reserved for vir-mem. I heard that both HD's should not be on the same ide cable, but I tried it both ways and didn't notice any difference. Does it matter? Also, would it make any significant difference to put the swap file on an ATA-100 (or better) HD? :beard:
