Default Virtual Computer Ports

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum, had a couple quick questions. Hopefully, I can get some help here.

What exactly is a virtual computer port? I'm looking for a general description and definition. Also, how do you direct data to different ports? Finally, what are some of the most common port addresses and their use(s). (Not looking for hardware ports btw).

Any and all help is appreciated.
