He was actually talking of getting a 6800 GT, not a 6600 GT. 6800 GT will support him well into the future.

Don't get the X800XL, it is a good card and everything, and beats the 6800 GT in some benchmarks, but it lacks the most crucial component that future games require, and that is Pixel Shader 3.0. The 6800 GT has Shader 3.0 so it will be ready for today's games as well as future games. In fact, the 6800 GT should serve you well until the Unreal Engine 3 era, when everybody is going to have to get a new card.

NICE! That's going to be almost exactly my build too, save the RAM (OCZ PC3200 2x52 plat. rev 2) and PSU (Enermax Noisetaker 485 W)

Well, on newegg, the 6800GT prices are OUTRAGAOUS!!!!!

He seems to have money man. I am sure the price is not as much of a problem for him as performance. Thus his initial selection of X800XL vs 6800 GT.

Go for the 6800GT. you'll be VERY dissapointed when you realize that you paid sh*t loads of cash for hardware that can't run games maxed out. a good example of this is Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Shader Model 3.0.

the word "expensive" is relative to your yearly income. I paid 375 a card + my motherboard has dropped about 25$ in price since i bought it.

I'd personally say get a 6800 ultra card or wait till the 512mb 6800s come out (im not sure on the date).
