video card install options?

well, i have more questions. i asked this in another thread, but i wanted a whole thread devoted to this.

are there other ways to connect a video card to the motherboard? can it be done with a ribbon cable of some sort?

i have installed 2 video cards on 2 motherboards in my time, and both were perpendicular to the mobo. can it be paralell, either beside or above it?
