actually alienware says its not the graphics card that matters when doing this its the mobo. any graphics card can be used and the controllers on the mobo take care of splitting up and synchronizing the picture. its supposed to be very good performance wise though because you have 2 graphics cards each doing only half the work.

they tried to do it with old computers but it didnt work so well, so it got scrapped

No of course not, just read alot about it
