Default Using a tv for a monitor

I have the oportunity to get a 19" flat screen tv, ( a flat tube not lcd) for 100 bucks, could I use this as a monitor??

I'm sure there is a reason people don't always do this, what are the advantages/disadvantages

the disadvantage is being stuck at resolutions that are something like 640x480 or 800x600. you will need either a video card that has a video output or a tv coder.
