usb device detection problem

I'm trying to get my usb device to install on my windows but the windows keep popping up messages such as "usb device detected" but then it pops up "device can not be reconized" or "device may not function correctly". i know the device works on my computer before but now it doesn't.... i think there has been some usb drivers still loaded on the computer so windows is refering to those old drivers... does anyone know where to delete files so windows treats the device as new and will attempt to receive new drivers and not use the old ones? or know how to resolve this usb problem..

i've updated all the usb drivers and still doesn't not work...

uhh.....im stumped...here's a few things that might help me...if you would post your OS....and what exactly is your USB devise?

sorry i'm running windows xp
trying to connect my cell phone to my computer through usb
suppose to set up as a modem or something but the windows wouldn't detect
