True HDTVs have 1080 verticle pixels (1080p)
rip off HDTVs have 768 verticle pixels (768p)
the 768p TV's say they upconvert to 1080i, but its not true HD, its an interpetation of true HD on a lower resolution.

by far the best deal on HDTV's is Samsung DLP's. I got my 50" for ~1900 and about a month later my friend got a 56" for the same price. they are crazy good deals (get the extended warrentee cuz the light gets dim after like 2 years)
