tv question (sorry for this)

i think this is off topic sort of but i dont know where else to turn.
i want to buy a high definition tv (for xbox 360) but every tv i look at says it requires a set top box to do so. is this right?

i thought you could just plug the xbox or wateva straight into the tv and boom high definition
