Default Trouble formating external drive

I'm trying to access one of my backup external hard drives and it says it needs to be formatted all of the sudden. So, I try to format the drive, but after 8 hours, it only has one bar of progress using the Windows XP format utility. Is there anything else I can do here?

Hook it up as an internal harddrive, then format.
