Question (Temporarily) lost my HD

I'm experiencing a very strange phenomenon, my HD disappears. As a result, my pc stops, it tries to reboot, but fails to find my default OS. If I switch off the computer, and open switch it on after a few minutes, the pc returns to normal.
When I check my BIOS, the HD continues to be defined.
My only guess is this happens while VirusScan runs a long scanning session. Still, this is only a guess.
What can I do to avoid this alarming behavior?
