Yeah companies still back up huge amounts of data on to massive reels of tape. You could try writing a program to encode the data into morse code and put it onto the tape as audio.

\'There is only one basic human right, and that is to do as you **** well please.
And with it comes the only basic human duty, to take the consequences.\'

Thanks for your help horndude & m3trj. I aien't got much programming experience but I'll try it out. Your morse idea is very usefull, I could use 2 different frequences for it. Those tape drives.. are they really that expensive? I know ... for large bussiness it would be very usefull, like storing a terabyte on a tape, but for personal use it costs way too much.

well if your serious about it start here and see if there's a tape how to:

then look up the "tar" command, that will help with some insight

google for some homebrew computer sites and see what others have done

the part of converting data to sound isnt hard at all, whats hard is coordinating the data stream and the tape drive together

yep, commercial tape drives are very very expensive, thousand dollars roughly, the tapes themselves are cheap

There are cheaper tape drives for PC's but they usually arent very good,I had one for awhile, it was pretty slow. The best ones come with a scsi interface, that helps alot.
