Question System errors after installing RAM

I currently have:

Gateway E-3600 series running Win XP
P4 1.7 ghz 256 RAM
possible 1536 RAM

I have 2 open slots for memory upgrades. I bought an extra 512 RAM and installed it with no problems. After about a week or so my PC started crashing and rebooting itself. I have since taken the RAM out and have had no errors.

After doing some reading on what might have caused the problem I have come to the conclusion that my BIOS needs to be updated. My current BIOS is from 2001 and I have no Idea on how or where to go to get this upgrade. My PC is out of warranty so Gateway won't touch me with a 10 foot pole.

Any help or links would be greatly appreciated.

You should diagnose the modules with Memtest86+.
